Somatic Genome Alterations in Human Lung Cancers
© 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. All rights reserved. Like other cancers, lung cancer is a disease of somatic genome alterations. Lung adenocarcinoma, lung squamous cell carcinoma, and small cell lung carcinoma have all recently been subjected to comprehensive genomic analyses. All of these lung cancer histologies are characterized by high rates of somatic mutation, copy number alteration, and rearrangement, including common TP53 mutations. Both lung adenocarcinoma and lung squamous cell carcinoma are characterized by readily targetable genomic aberrations using current therapies, while such alterations are more rare in small cell lung carcinoma.
