On-chip electrophoretic concentration of liposomes for antibody-based viral biosensors

We present an on-chip electrophoretic concentration system that can be integrated with a microbiosensor for the sensitive detection of viral pathogens in environmental water. The concentration unit consists of a nanoporous polyacrylamide membrane that is fabricated in situ at the junction of glass microchannels. Analytes can be concentrated electrophoretically by applying an electric field across the membrane. Using this membrane, we have shown about two orders of magnitude concentration of fluorescently labeled liposomes. Liposomes can be functionalized with antibodies and encapsulated with electrochemical markers for detection downstream. © 2009 CBMS.
