Particle screening in polymeric microfluidic devices using insulating dielectrophoresis and frequency modulated electric fields

We present two novel results: (i) the realization of high-dynamic range, continuous-flow sorting of three particle types spanning an order of magnitude in dielectrophoretic mobility in an insulating dielectrophoresis (iDEP) device, and (ii) the design of a novel technique for continuous-flow particle sorting using in situ UV-polymerized sidewall electrodes and phase modulated (PM) electric fields to increase separation sensitivity. To the authors' knowledge, this work represents the first implementation of PM signals in insulating dielectrophoresis devices. © 2009 CBMS.
