abstract

  • Measurement of quality of care for diabetes requires an accurate assessment of the presence of diabetes. To detect diabetes in a population many investigators have proposed composite criteria involving combinations of relevant clinical and administrative data. These composite definitions provide an accurate assessment of the prevalence of diabetes. However, patients whose diabetes is defined differently may have different levels of baseline control. Therefore, application of a composite definition of diabetes for quality of care may distort the true quality measurement.
