abstract

  • Herpesvirus infection of the vascular endothelium results in (1) the loss of anticoagulant properties and the acquisition of procoagulant properties, (2) increased binding of inflammatory cells to herpesvirus- infected endothelial cells, and (3) induction of growth factor and cytokine expression by vascular cells. However, the specific role of herpesviruses in thrombotic vascular disease and their contribution to thrombosis at sites of atherosclerosis remain unknown.
