Predicting complications of mitral valve prolapse
Diabetes Mellitus, Type 2
Hypertrophy, Left Ventricular
This study of 316 patients with mitral valve prolapse was conducted to determine the ate and predictors of serious complications - mitral regurgitation requiring valve replacement or repair, infective endocarditis, sudden death, cerebral ischemia - that occur in a small minority of patients with the condition. The overall rate of fatal and nonfatal complications was one in 100 patient-years. The strongest predictor of complications was a holosystolic murmur or echocardiographic evidence of severe mitral regurgitation followed by older age and male sex.
