University medical center participation in residency training programs for graduates of foreign medical schools
Foreign Medical Graduates
Internship and Residency
Medical residency programs in university medical centers are staffed almost exclusively by graduates of U.S. medical schools (USMGs), whereas community hospital programs are staffed by graduates of foreign medical schools (FMGs). Training programs in the latter institutions are often limited by the previous education of the residents and by the focus of the attending and supervisory physicians. It is our contention that university senior and junior faculty should devote some of their time to working with FMGs in the community hospital. We describe a project that we believe has been helpful and rewarding for both the residents and the faculty.
