abstract

  • It has been suggested that one mechanism of ischemia-related mitral regurgitation (MR) is mitral valve prolapse (MVP) caused by involvement of the papillary muscles and supporting ventricular walls.1-3 Crawford2 reported a patient who developed auscultatory findings of MVP and MR (later confirmed angiographically) during the first day of a second acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Another group reported that MVP was present in 8 of 43 patients with MR studied 1 month after AMI, although they did not use standard echocardiographic criteria to diagnose MVP.3. © 1988.
