abstract

  • Because of the obvious implications in terms of their potential as immunosuppressants, the present study was undertaken to investigate the basis for the immunosuppressive properties of two of the polar organic compounds that exhibited significant suppression of cellular and humoral immune responses. Butyric acid and dimethylsulfoxide are potent immunosuppressants capable of inhibiting a variety of immune responses relevant to organ transplantation. The cellular basis for suppression is secondary, at least in part, to inhibition of production of soluble factors pertinent to ultimate realization of such immune responses.
