Detection of anti-donor 'Ia' antibodies: A strong correlate of rejection
Our findings of anti-B-cell (Ia) antibodies as a strong correlate of rejection activity is in accordance with the findings previously reported in humans by Ettenger et al. and is consistent with the immunogenicity of the I-region differences alone resulting in the rejection of skin and heart allografts. Our results might appear to be in conflict with recent experiments in rodent transplant models where passive transfer of serum with anti-Ia antibodies seems to result in enhancement. The recent finding in our rat renal allograft model, production of anti-Ia antibodies in association with rejection, and total suppression of anti-Ia antibody production by the passively enhanced recipient tempts us to speculate that passive transfer of anti-Ia antibodies may mediate enhancement by interfering with the recipients immune response to these important antigen systems.
