Antibody to varicella zoster virus in low-birth-weight newborn infants
Herpesvirus 3, Human
Infant, Low Birth Weight
Varicella is uncommon in the immediate newborn period. Recently in a neonatal intensive care unit, 31 neonates and approximately 125 staff members were inadvertently exposed to a nurse with chicken pox. Subsequently there were no clinical cases of varicella among the 31 neonates, many of whom were low-birth-weight infants. This incident stimulated us to investigate the presence of maternally derived antibody to varicella zoster virus among low-birth-weight infants.
