  • The authors demonstrated the presence in myasthenic patients of a circulating globulin that blocked the binding of 125I labeled alpha bungarotoxin to the acetylcholine receptor extracted from denervated rat skeletal muscle. The antibody was present in at least five and possibly 11 out of 15 myasthenic patients studied. None of the control serums contained the inhibitory globulin. In a subsequent report. they presented a more sensitive assay, which depended upon binding of the myasthenic globulin to acetylcholine receptor extracted from denervated rat skeletal muscle. In the present report this assay was used to study the presence of acetylcholine receptor antibodies in a population of myasthenic patients with varying HL A phenotypes and in a population of control patients.
