Ziyad Riyad Mahfoud   Professor of Research in Population Health Sciences

Dr. Ziyad Mahfoud is a Professor of Research in Population Health Sciences. Dr. Mahfoud joined Weill Cornell Medicine in Qatar (WCM-Q) as an Associate Professor in September 2010 from the American University in Beirut where he served as an Associate Professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Population Health. Prior to that he taught at both the University of Florida and University of Kentucky.

Dr. Mahfoud serves as the Director of Health Quantitative Sciences in the Institute for Population Health and as the Associate Director of the Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and Biomathematics Core at WCM-Q. He is the inaugural and current chair of the Data and Safety Monitoring Board at WCM-Q. He is also the director of the Area of Concertation course. 

Dr Mahfoud is an expert in designing complex studies including clinical trials and in advanced data analyses. His research interests focus on tobacco use, mental health, adolescents’ health and medical education. Ziyad was among the first researchers to work on topics considered taboo in the region such as HIV AIDS and sexual abuse among children in Lebanon.  

Dr Mahfoud created and taught courses at the undergraduate, graduate and post graduate levels where he always received great praise and awards.

Dr. Mahfoud holds a Ph.D. in Statistics (2001) from University of Florida at Gainesville and a BS and MSc in Mathematics from the American University of Beirut.

  • Dr Mahfoud research interests focuses on Adolescents'' well being; in particular, mental health, healthy lifestyle and the effect of their relationship with their parents on their health. He also works on tobacco use including Shisha (waterpipe) smoking and among different populations such as adolescents and pregnant women and their husbands. Dr Mahfoud also works on validation of the Arabic versions of several mental health scales where those are now heavily used in the Arab region and internationally among researchers working with Arabic speaking populations.  As a biostatistician, Dr Mahfoud provides expert advice and support to researchers, students, physicians at WCM-Q and other institutions in Qatar and beyond in different fields of study design and analysis. Dr Mahfoud have helped in the design of several clinical trials and other interventional studies.
