Mrinali Patel Gupta, MD is a board-certified retina specialist and Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at Weill Cornell Medical College.  Dr. Gupta specializes in the medical and surgical treatment of vitreoretinal diseases, including conditions such as retinal detachment, age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusions, and macular diseases. 

Mrinali graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Duke University.  She received her M.D. from Duke University School of Medicine, where she was elected into the Alpha Omega Alpha academic honor society.  She was also a recipient of the prestigious Howard Hughes Medical Institute - National Institutes of Health Research Fellowship, through which she spent one year conducting research studies in age-related macular degeneration at the National Eye Institute of the National Institutes of Health.  

After Internship Training at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Dr. Gupta completed Residency Training in Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School / Mass Eye and Ear Infirmary, followed by Fellowship Training in Vitreoretinal Diseases and Surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College / New York – Presbyterian Hospital.  During her fellowship, Dr. Gupta was the recipient of the Heed Ophthalmic Foundation Fellowship and the prestigious Ronald G. Michels Fellowship Foundation Award, given to the most outstanding retina fellows in the country.

Dr. Gupta is actively engaged in clinical, translational, and basic science research in retinal diseases.  She is committing bridging the clinical bedside to the laboratory bench to drive innovation in retinal diagnostics and therapeutics.  Dr. Gupta has published over 30 peer-reviewed research articles.  She has authored several textbook chapters and has presented her research at national and international meetings.  Dr. Gupta serves as an ad hoc scientific reviewer to several major ophthalmology journals including RETINA, PLoS One, BMC Ophthalmology, and Retinal Cases and Brief Reports.

Dr. Gupta is also actively involved in resident and fellow education and serves as Program Director for the Weill Cornell Medical College Medical Retina Fellowship.

  • Dr. Gupta's research laboratory, led in conjunction with John TG Pena MD, PhD, conducts basic science and translational studies evaluating the molecular mechanisms of retinal diseases and novel therapeutics for retinal diseases.  Additionally, Dr. Gupta conducts and participates in a number of clinical studies in retinal disease and emerging medical and surgical treatments for retinal disease.

  • Mrinali Gupta, MD, is actively engaged in teaching residents and fellows in the Vitreoretinal Surgery Service of the Weill Cornell Medical College Department of Ophthalmology.  She currently serves as Program Director of the Weill Cornell Medical College Medical Retina Fellowship Program.
