Cardiovascular research

Measurement of myocardial protein metabolism synthesis using positron emission tomography. This research is directed toward development of a method that permits non-invasive measurement of myocardial protein synthesis. Because amino acids which are protein precursors can be labeled with isotopes that emit positron radiation, but do not interfere with protein synthesis, positron emission tomography is a logical approach for measuring protein synthesis non-invasively. It is hoped that by employing this technique, protein metabolism can be measured in patients with disease processes felt to influence protein metabolism such as aortic and mitral regurgitation.
