Christopher Triggle   Prof of Pharmacol

Dr. Triggle's research focuses on the role of the endothelium in the regulation of vascular tone in normal and pathophysiological states such as in diabetes where the diabetic mileau is associated with significant elevations in cardiovascular-related morbidity and mortality.  Current areas of interest include investigations of the cellullar basis for the vascular protective effects of the anti-hyperglycaemic drug, metformin, and the role of the deacetylase SIRT1 and microRNAs. In addition, the link between obesity and diabetes and the elevated risk of cardiovascular disease is being explored with a focus on the role of perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT) on vascular function. The PVAT is the source of numerous bioactive factors (adipokines) that can both positively and negatively modulate vascular function.
