Surgeons have always been interested in outcomes. However, while our surgical techniques have evolved considerably, our tools to assess the effectiveness of surgical therapy have changed very little. My goal is to improve the way that we, as surgeons, make clinical decisions, and to improve our understanding of the impact of surgery on our patients' lives.

My research combines aspects of traditional outcomes research, comparative effectiveness, patient-centered outcomes research, operations research, and engineering. My research team includes other surgeons, research scientists, and engineers at the medical school, university, and other institutions and industry partners across the country.
